Division 3 test piece:
"Beast from the East"
Grade level: 3.5
Composed and aranged by R.J. Irwin
Adjudicated by Ross Irwin & Bill Broughton
This exciting new chart from R. J. Irwin will be an exciting addition to your band's program. With a dirty, swamp groove and various influences from world music, this chart will provide new and interesting challenges for young players. Snippets of cultural sounds with everything from Indian music, to West Coast Psychedelia, to negro-spiritual slave chants will challenge the ensemble to work as a stylistic team. This chart requires energy, swagger and feeling. The whole band will have to put a lot of soul into this piece to make it "feel" right.
Brass ranges are reasonable, but players will need a wide range of dynamics and colour within that range. As with every R. J. Irwin chart, expect hip, slightly backwards phrasing, various solo cameos and many quirky and offbeat textures. Enjoy!
