1st Prize Money - $2,000

Last year this new division of Generations in Jazz was introduced and proved to be extremely successful with 19 Vocal ensembles
participating.

As usually happens with the introduction of any new concept, it is
important to reflect upon what we did well and what we could improve upon going into the future.

As we had recognized in the early years of the Stage Band Awards there needed to be an opportunity for ensembles to perform with other ensembles of a similar level.

So, in 2012 we have introduced a second Division - to work in much the same way as the Stage Band component of the weekend.

This will give the Music Director the opportunity to select the Set Piece for the ensemble based on their assessment of which would be the most suitable. A description of each Set Piece is provided for you to make an informed decision.

To balance the performance adjudication an A Capella chart will be required to be performed by all ensembles. Therefore the "Own
Choice" selection for Division 2 is required to be A Cappella.

You will obviously note that Division 1 Set Piece is A Cappella and Division 2 will require a rhythm backing. There will be an MP3 available for the Division 2 Set Piece. See music.

There will be a rhythm section available for the Division 1 ensembles who require this for their "Own Choice". Contact details for this Rhythm section will be made available at the time of registration.

It is open to high school vocal ensembles with a minimum of four members.

There is no upper limit for members, but if your school has a large number of vocalists you might wish to consider entering two groups, as once the size is greater than sixteen members, it gets much harder to keep a "tight" ensemble sound for this sort of singing. Having said that, if you want to enter a larger group, that is allowed.

In summary the guidelines are:

1. 1. Each group will perform a Set Piece:
   Division 1 " Picture Perfect" - written by Naomi Crellin
   Division 2: " Dear John " - written by Andrew Piper
   
2. 2. A piece of your own choice ( max 5 mins )
   Division 1 - rhythm section provided
   Division 2 - A Capella
   Your own choice must be considered to be in the jazz genre. Pick something that you feel best shows the strength of your group.
   
3. 3. Due to the fact that not all schools will have soprano, alto,
   tenor and bass singers (such as an all girl or all boy school) the Set Piece will be a four part arrangement that can be obtained in one of three versions:
   
   Soprano, alto, tenor, bass – SATB
   Soprano, soprano, alto, alto – SSAA
   Tenor, tenor, bass, bass – TTBB
   
   You will need to decide which version best suits your ensemble.

The award will be adjudicated by the members of The Idea of North.
