2018 Lineup

The Generations in Jazz Festival (GIJ) makes its much anticipated return in 2018 to Mount Gambier, South Australia, from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 May 2018. Showcasing a host of celebrated local, national and international artists, this year’s Jazz program offers something for everyone.

Below is an outline of the festival concerts and activities that the public have access to over the festival period.

Scholarship Adjudication No 1

This year, Generations in Jazz will be presenting a unique concert held in the heart of Mount Gambier. Taking place at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, this concert will be an unmissable celebration featuring Australia’s internationally-renowned virtuoso trumpeter James Morrison, special guest appearance from US jazz sensation Jeff Clayton on saxophone as well as performances from Australia’s next generation of jazz musicians selected as finalists in the 2018 James Morrison Instrumental and GIJ Vocal Scholarships.

This concert will also form Part One of the scholarship adjudication process for the 2018 Generations in Jazz Scholarships. Finalists are chosen from across the country from a large pool of entrants who have displayed incredible musical ability.

This concert will also feature special guest appearances from Australia’s internationally-renowned virtuoso trumpeter James Morrison and International Jazz Trombone star Shannon Barnett .

ABOUT: For a first in the history of Generations in Jazz we will be opening the festival in true style with the Generations in Jazz Opening Gala Concert featuring Patti Austin, James Morrison and the Generations in Jazz Festival Big Band.

Patti will bring the house down at the Generations Friday night concert with the all-star big band playing music from her GRAMMY®-award winning album “Avant Gershwin”.

About: The City of Mount Gambier National Stage Band Awards and ANZ Vocal Ensemble Awards for school participants take learning out of the rehearsal room and onto the stage, providing young students with the ‘next step’ in their musical journey.

Don’t miss your chance to hear these hot sounds from over 350 of Australia’s coolest school jazz ensembles!

With bands beginning to roll in from 7:00am, the Saturday program is packed with an amazing showcase of some of Australia’s best and brightest ‘Next Generation’ musicians competing for top honours for their respective schools.

Over 5000 emerging musicians of all ages and from across the country, have been preparing their repertoire for their time on stage. With performances taking place in ten different pavilions across the Generations in Jazz Festival Precinct, the City of Mount Gambier National Stage Band Awards and ANZ Vocal Ensemble Awards this experience is one that competing students and enthusiastic audiences are unlikely to forget.

A firm summertime favourite for all generations of the family, The Cat Empire will be headlining at the Generations in Jazz Saturday Night Concert. Since their inception over a decade ago they have celebrated an unrivalled level of success both at home and overseas. This Melbourne born band is now world renown for a live show that never fails to deliver in the melody-driven-joyful-dancing stakes. With a slew of awards and multiplatinum albums to their name, and well over 1200 shows under their belts, their journey as musicians has been spectacular.  Now a fully independent band on their own Global label, they have consistently defied fashion and carved their own musical journey, remaining humble and eternally cheerful in the process.

What makes The Cat Empire truly unique though is their prowess as musicians.  Starting their career in Melbourne Jazz clubs, and honing their chops on festival stages throughout the world, this is a very tight musical outfit of truly gifted musicians. They music they create is uniquely their own, as is their infectious, dance-inducing live show.

The James Morrison and GIJ Scholarships are one of the most vibrant and exciting parts of the Generations in Jazz Festival. Each year, twelve of Australia’s top emerging talent vie for the honour of becoming the winner of the prestigious James Morrison and GIJ Vocal Scholarships.

The annual competition attracts Australia’s most outstanding young jazz musicians and over the past 23 years, it has served as a launching pad for some of the country’s greatest jazz artists.

Forming Part Two of the scholarship adjudication process this concert is sure to delight audiences as finalists display their great range of talents before guest adjudicators.

Sunday we sign off for another year in style with some roof-raising jazz hits. This closing concert will feature the awards ceremony of the 2018 National Stage Band and Vocal Awards including performances from the 2018 Generations in Jazz Superbands and Future Finalists and 2018 James Morrison Scholarship & GIJ Vocal Scholarship winners.
